Fifth Interlude - A Floo Conversation

“ Oooh, Miss Granger, you are looking positively sulky today!”

“I’m not sulky, I’m depressed.”

“Now that sounds bad. Do you want to tell me, or do you prefer me to leave you to your wallowing?”

“Just go back to whatever you were doing. You wouldn't understand anyway.”

“When you're like this, you are extremely infuriating! Why wouldn't I understand, today of all days?”

“Nobody cares, so why would you?”

“What do you mean by ‘nobody cares’? I, for one, do care. And so do the others. Come on, spill the beans!”

“It’s not important, really.”

“As far as I can see, my dear, your nose is red and so are your eyes. If it makes you cry, it has to be important.”

“I… oh, I don't know, probably it’s just hormones. But I’ve been invited for Christmas… and everywhere you look there's just couples… I mean, even Malfoy, that bastard, isn't alone at Christmas!”

“Forgive me for thinking logically when I should probably join in your howls of woe, but if you’ve been invited, you cannot possibly be alone.”

“Are you making fun of me, or what? A fine friend you are… And now you’re rolling your eyes, I can see it! As if you didn't know what I mean! Of course I wouldn’t be alone, but afterwards, when they all go to sleep, and can hold each other, and kiss each other good night, I’ll have to return home, into an empty fla-ha-hat!”

“Oh, I see. That’s really bad, yes. Listen, what if we spent Christmas together at your flat, just the two of us, and then I stay overnight? It’s not what all the others have, but it's better than nothing.”

“Really? Would you do that? But what about the school? You have to-”

“Hermione, I have spent every single Christmas since 1979 at Hogwarts. I don't think Albus will have any objections if I have other plans in 2004.”

“Oh, that would be… that would be marvellous, Sev. I could prepare dinner-”

“I know you’ll hate me for saying this, but would you be terribly offended if I cooked? You could do the menial work, to keep you occupied but avoid serious damage…”

“You’re a bastard, but also a wonderful friend. Okay, so I’ll see you on Christmas day?”

“You’ll see me on Christmas day.”
